Chief Executive Officer & Founder – Harrison Assessments

Fred Demilt
Fred Demilt is working as a Manager of Projects at an injection molding company, supplying parts to various industries, largely in the production of trucks.
Fred leads a team of 10 people, mainly occupied with the project management for external and internal projects within the site.
After an engineering education he started working in the thin wall container manufacturing business and had his specific technical education within this specialism.
The first 20 years he mainly worked in engineering functions where the education programmes mostly supported engineering activities, so he was working mainly on the technical skills.
More or less 10 years ago where he was promoted into Project Manager and later leading a team of Project Managers, it was quite obvious that other skills were required.
He shared the following:
“Exploring the communication styles and behaviours of people was not really in my comfort zone and I was struggling to see the connection to my years of experience and the so – called hard skills, the technical skills. Most engineers face this struggle when they are promoted to a management function. A good engineer does not make a good leader, it requires a different skills set. I found out the hard way.
Five years ago, my team and I were given the opportunity to start an education program with Investors in Learning, which included various ingredients including The Engage programme.
Looking back at the real struggle I had leading a team as a skilled engineer, this programme was a real eye opener. “
I now see myself as a leader and team motivator and I am consistently applying the skills and the techniques and the whole education package, every day. I feel a lot more comfortable in my role but also see a lot of benefits in my personal life. It just makes you a better person.”

Geoff Simmonds
Geoff has worked in the Automotive Sector for 30 years and has been at Senior levels for the last 15 years. He has worked in Tier 1 multinational businesses which served the mass car market and is now a Managing Director of a company that supplies the high end automotive companies such as Aston Martin, Bentley and Maclaren.
He is therefore highly aware of the needs of the automotive sector and the way in which things have evolved and changed globally over the years. When Investors in Learning first started working with the Automotive sector Tier 1 multinational companies as well as smaller providers, we realised that it is almost certainly one of the most challenging manufacturing sectors to work within. The time scales, organisation, human, logistical and project management factors with the pressures of the constant unknown variables and many multiple supply chains are very difficult to control and manage.
We have worked with Project Management Offices as well as with multiple departments within the sector including Commercial, Project management, Manufacturing Engineering, Process Engineering, Automation, Tooling, Operations, Supply Chain, Purchasing, HR, and Quality. Working across various departments in any industry is a real eye opener for the realisation of the importance for the need of clarity around inter departmental responsibilities and accountabilities to ensure that products are produced of the necessary quality and the flow of information and communication between departments.
Geoff Simmonds has been a support to us along the way to understand the challenges and needs that are persistent in the sector. We are grateful for the collaboration and learning and continue to work with colleagues in the automotive sector to stay abreast of developments in these fast changing times. We are grateful to all our collaborators for the opportunity to keep on learning together.
Managing Director, IM Kelly Automotive

Simon is able to lead complex change agendas based around financial drivers, governance, international relationships, focused on designing and delivering high-quality Student Experiences. In each role, Simon delivered improvements in external metrics, accreditations through PSRBs, enhanced institutional reputation, and met institutional KPIs. Currently, Simon is the Principal at an Alternative Provider, working with the OU and other UKHEIs.
Simon has enjoyed sustained success in bold, entrepreneurial academic leadership throughout his career, with the breadth of understanding to make imaginative connections, seeing the clear relationship between teaching and research reflected in external metrics. With extensive experience designing UG and PG awards centred on innovative curricula, effective learning and teaching, and integrated employability, Simon is recognised nationally and internationally for his expertise. Simon has delivered numerous workshops through the Higher Education Academy, international conferences, that has led to government committee representation, and UKHE consultancy.
Simon works with impact at a university-wide level, relying on effective data to support decision-making. At London Met, Simon delivered the university’s Research Strategy, devised and introduced a Data Dashboard providing original insight into retention, progression and award attainment. Simon initiated using module performance benchmarks, promoting significant regulatory change including modification of the University’s Degree algorithm. Simon’s achieved a university-wide cultural shift to a more student-centred approach reliant on data to record course performance.
