About the Programme

"In today’s fast changing world, it’s not so much what you know anymore that counts, because often what you know is old. It is how fast you learn. That skill is priceless."

OVERVIEW

The one constant thing in our lives is Change.

Bruce Lee [Actor and Martial Arts expert] is famous for speaking about the flexibility of water, and how everyone should strive to be like it. After all, water does not have any set shape, and it conforms to whatever container it is placed in.

This statement applies to one essential life skill: the ability to adapt to Change. Being able to adapt to the fast pace and uncertain changing times is one of the most essential skills that a person can have. As Darwin said in 1809,

“It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to Change.” - Charles Darwin 1809

The term survival of the fittest has become the common interpretation; actually the real meaning which can be found in his works and what he has always referred to, is the ones most responsive to Change. Those who are not able to adapt, are very likely to become extinct sooner than those who are able to adapt. From science, to technology, and politics, history has shown that those who are too tied to the past are bound to be left in the past.

If you are able to adapt to the times and Change when it is time to Change, there is no limit to the power and success that you can achieve. If we are ready to accept and embrace Change then we are quicker to apply our adaptive strategies without as much resistance, and therefore our attentional mechanisms and our power of learning to create the new necessary foundations, will be of higher quality and kick in more quickly than if we are stuck, inflexible and resisting Change.

We have seen through much research and exploration that Embracing Change or even enjoying certain Change is often resisted by humans. We also vary in our ability and aptitude to be flexible and be able to adapt to Change. Humans are creatures of habit; having to Change our patterns and behaviours can be frustrating and difficult. This feeling of having to break existing patterns and build new ones, then creates a resistance. Patterning is a biologically ingrained process, and it is a great help in enabling us to learn and manage situations and it is a core way in which we navigate our world. The learning process takes us from the controlled, conscious stage where we need focus and full attention as we are laying down new neurological connections, to an automatic process, where the new neurological pathways can fire more easily on their own without needing the same amount of direct focus and attention. In order for any learning to become automatic, the brain lays down neurological traces that are then able to fire more quickly and easily than new traces. The firing threshold becomes much lower, as we have trained our brain that the specific behaviour is something that we will be doing a lot more of and therefore the biological patterns have been laid down. This means that we can do other tasks in tandem, for example, once we are skilled at driving, we can also hold a conversation or listen to the radio at the same time. This is all very useful to our ability to learn; however it can also be a hindrance when these patterns need to be broken and no longer serve us in a new context.

There are different types of Change. There is the Change that is thrust upon us and there is the Change that we plan and attempt to control. Whatever the type of Change, there are always going to be variables that we cannot control. However much need we have for the control over our life events, the notion of full control is not honouring the dynamic and unpredictable nature of our lives and the universe. However stable our lives, we will always face the unexpected or the need to deal with new situations that we have never encountered before. Of course the nature of Change also ranges on a long continuum, from being hugely positive in nature through to very negative and trauma-inducing. The nature of the Change will of course be a large determinant to the attitude, skills, knowledge and emotional resources we need to deal with this, so that it can be turned into an event that does not damage us but strengthens us to go forth positively with our lives.

Our fear and self-limiting beliefs tend to kick into action when we are faced with the disruptive consequences of Change. There is no escaping the fact that Change is a disruptor and it can feel uncomfortable and create a whole new set of emotions in us that are hard for us to deal with. It is our power of choice that enables us to activate the attitude and approach necessary to deal with the Changes that we need to face. We cannot control all the events in our life, but we can control and develop strategies to manage how we react to the impact that these events have on our lives.

The more we use our power of choice, develop our knowledge around the psychology and biology of Change, and the more we focus our mindsets on our ability to positively adapt to Change, the more resilient we will become to dealing with the impact that any Change will bring to our lives. This programme is about raising awareness of the need to develop a conscious attitude to Change and to expect Change to be a normal part of life. For every day Changes, if we expect Change then we become more skilled and able to embrace Change, rather than spend our energy on resisting it.

We will explore the concept and application of Authentic Resilience in order to ensure that you learn strategies for individuals, teams and across the organisation to ensure that people are ready for Change and equipped to deal effectively with the impact of Change. The ability to embrace Change along with the skills and emotional resources necessary is a foundation which is key to ensuring that organisations are equipped in this fast changing unpredictable world.

Embracing Change in Uncertain Times

For Individuals, Teams and Organisations

Change can come into our lives as a result of a crisis, as a result of choice or just by chance. Whatever the situation, we are all faced with having to make a choice – how do we adapt to the Change? Do we consciously make a Change within ourselves emotionally and physically? Do we accept that the Change will have exerted pressure on us and therefore we take this responsibility into our hands in order to ensure that we have the skills and to equip ourselves to deal with this Change to minimise the damage and maximise the chances that we have strategies and tools to protect ourselves, and strengthen ourselves? Do we embrace the Change and the responsibility that comes with it to, equip ourselves and take the steps to become authentically resilient to deal with the emotional and physical repercussions of the Change ?

There are times we experience unexpected unpleasant situations in life. Being adaptable ensures you stay afloat when adversities of life try to sink you down. Instead of running away from reality, you learn to embrace it and eventually accept the new reality it brings and create a new flow of life.

Flexibility and a willingness to embrace Change will make you a more valuable member of your organisation, a more authentically resilient partner, mother, father —one who can reliably deal with many different opportunities and circumstances. Importantly, if you are able to manage the Changes in your life, then you will be in a better position to also support others. Looking after your own needs is paramount if you want to have the strength and aptitude to support others.

We may not like all the Changes that are occurring, but we can be sure that if we resist them, they will impact be more negatively, we will spend all our energy on resisting, and will not prosper. An Embracing Change mindset supports us to appreciate that this is the only way to support any organisation in these fast changing times. Competition and technology are constantly combining to force organisations to re-evaluate company operations and the necessary learning and development so that employees can prosper and perform effectively in the face of Volatility, Uncertainty, Confusion and Ambiguity. Therefore fast learning is essential. It is helpful to look on Changed circumstances and the challenges they present with fresh eyes and rather than dwell on the past, embrace the future and the possibilities it presents; take on challenges enthusiastically and with a desire to learn and that will create the foundation for successful adaptation and organisational strength.

Compare your reaction and a small child’s reaction to thunder. You are likely to ignore it or to dismiss it as not being foundational to that moment, but a child may be anxious and seeks assurances from the nearest adult. It is only human to fear the unknown—confidence comes with understanding. From long experience, we know that thunder is a natural phenomenon that cannot harm us. The child does not yet understand it. That is why an important step toward coping with Change is understanding it: what is happening, why, and how. It is then of course another level altogether to be able to deal with inevitable adversity and Change that may actually be able to harm us.

When we recognize the possibilities created by Change, we are more prepared and positive about the ned to continually learn, stay abreast of Change and to exploit them. You will find Change as not something to fear, but as something to welcome and turn to your own advantage.

Our resilience in life can only grow stronger when we Embrace Change and manage these challenges in a positive way, rather than focusing on the negatives and not embracing the opportunities that Change can bring to our lives. Often there is a lot of work required, however as we on.

There is no escaping the impact that Change can bring into in our lives. Managing Change in life is key to living a life where we are not surviving but thriving.

How do your teams prepare mentally to handle whatever life and organisational Changes may throws at them?

Do team members feel anxious and worried when faced with changing circumstances and unpredictable events? Has the team got a team strategy which informs them how to deal with unexpected events? Do your teams know the team members’ traits that need to be harnessed in times of Change and which individual team members may particularly be valuable in that context to support and facilitate the essential mindset to Embrace Change?

Change is inevitable not only in life but in business too. In this fast pace of Change, we all need to prepare ourselves to Embrace Change. We know that technology and people will be progressing rapidly for the foreseeable future, so we all need to be prepared to Embrace Change in order to ensure that we do not resist the effective learning that we all need to achieve in order to continue to thrive in this climate of Change and unpredictability. At a team level this conscious realisation is paramount as the attitude of one team member can significantly affect the rest of the team. Therefore a conscious effort needs to be made to ensure that the whole team fosters a mindset of Embracing Change . We need to recognise the impact we all have on each other and to ensure we all foster a mindset, which is conducive to fostering the learning and adaptive skills we need to ensure we stay ahead of the curve of the pace of Change.

Change is inevitable in life. Though sometimes emotionally disturbing, arming ourselves with lots of adaptabilities will go a long way in handling Change. Some people adapt easily and have a core set of traits that support them to adapt effectively and they make excellent team members, strengthening the necessary team mindset that will perpetuate a healthy attitude which provides a foundational strength to the team. However others find this particularly difficult or something that does not come naturally. Though adaptability may not be an inherent ability in many of us, it is something that we can learn with time. Adjusting our expectations consciously will go a long way in helping flow with the winds of Change, by making us more adaptable by consciously understanding and applying the traits that facilitate Change.

In this programme we will use our carefully selected psychometric tool to measure and assess the teams’ Embracing Change mindset and level of adaptability. It will involve team work in order to ensure that team values and behaviours are fostered and encouraged, and the team will be encouraged to develop a trusting and respectful learning environment in which people learn to support each other , honouring the differences we all have, and our individual strengths and vulnerabilities. The individual and team analysis will support team members to support each other in being adaptable recognising and tackling rigidity and inflexibility. This way the team will learn to dynamically self-correct and support all individuals to develop the essential team success habits.

Regular and conscious managed organisational Change is not an optional process to keep pace with in our fast pace of Change and to keep abreast of business development. All organisations, at one time or another, have to face either substantive modifications to some aspect of their business either from internal factors or from external factors outside of their control.

We live in a VUCA world. The concept of VUCA is an acronym – first used in 1987, drawing on the leadership theories of Warren Bennis and Burt Nanus. It describes the volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity of general conditions and situations. The U.S. Army War College introduced the concept of VUCA to describe the more volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous multilateral world perceived as resulting from the end of the Cold War. More frequent use and discussion of the term "VUCA" began from 2002 and derives from this acronym from military education. It has subsequently taken root in emerging ideas in strategic leadership that apply in a wide range of organisations, from for-profit corporations to education[5] .

We live in a VUCA world and therefore our organisations need to be able to develop processes that can deal with the necessary transformations, traits and have the aptitude to manage Change at an organisational level. The ability to learn effectively, to understand learning and have embedded processes that foster continuous learning are a core part of developing a mindset of Embracing Change.

This is why organisations have to be adaptive to Change. The more your culture is viewed as inflexible, the less collaboration to involve people in organisational decision making, the more likely that new and emerging leaders are to be frustrated that their ideas will die a quick death and begin to look outside the organisation for a more receptive employer or organisation. The different expectations across different generations also need to be considered here. Change either happens as an integral part of how your organisation functions, or it gets talked about as something the company will ‘get to’ but never does. In order to manage Change at an organisational level, this needs to be planned and integrated into the very fabric of the organisational values and processes.

Developing a Continuous Learning Culture is a key foundation and a key pillar to the ability of any individual or group of people to be able to manage the unpredictable, fast pace of Change and the complex challenges that face us in the world and our organisations today. The Learning culture can be the constant that helps people to navigate the turmoil and the ever-changing landscape.

As Senge so beautifully shares:

“A Learning Organisation is an organisation that is continually expanding its capacity to create its future…Courage is simply doing whatever is needed in pursuit of the vision.” Don't push growth; remove the factors limiting growth.”

Removing resistance to Change and Embracing Change , whilst addressing the work that needs to be done at an organisational level to do so, is a key factor that expands an organisation’s capacity to create its future and drive success sustainably.

So, how do you and other leaders in your company encourage and foster Change in its culture? Cultures that embrace accelerated organisational pace of Change have to invite input from every corner of every department.

Organisations need pro-active strategies and approaches and communications which drive the message to all people that Change is the natural state of things and therefore learning from each other has to sit at the heart of how we learn and ensure that we are taking all the expertise of all stakeholders into account and applying that learning to ensure that our organisation can grow from strength to strength.

We also need to recognise the impact of resistance to Change on daily and critical decision making across an organisation. Through explicit approaches, organisational vision and values which underpin the importance of Embracing Change , team decision making will have a reference to the bedrock of the role of Change in creating its future.

In this programme, we will help you to understand the fundamental importance of communicating the essential Embracing Change mindset across the organisation, and to develop the organisational vision and values that will underpin the essential behaviours and decision making skills to stimulate and foster individuals and teams and departments to become adaptable and be able to Embrace Change.
