OVERVIEW
Conversation is the most powerful learning tool ever invented. This is why we believe it is important to master the art of the conversation. The more we focus on becoming skilled Learning Conversationalists, the more we are likely to engage in the conversation and maximise the benefits it can bring us in the world of work.
Conversations carry news, create meaning, foster cooperation, create engagement, learning, interest and spark innovation.
Encouraging open, honest conversation through work space design, creating ground rules for conversing productively, and making room for conversation into the corporate culture, spreads intellectual capital, improves cooperation, and strengthens personal relationships.
So how can we maximise the power of Conversations and what do we mean by “Learning Conversations”?
Whether your bigger aim is to develop a Learning Organisation or just to increase your efficiencies and your bottom line, our thinking skills are enhanced through the ability to talk and think together with others authentically and skillfully; effective and engaging conversations are also highly likely to be a source of competitive advantage and organisational effectiveness.
How then do we start to change our approach and style of conversations to become more skilful? Organisations need people who can connect with each other in a more human way, ask and seek answers to new questions, solve new problems, and anticipate barriers before they arise. We need the all-important Human Elements to be fulfilled in order to be able to ensure that the Learning Environment and the safety is there as a foundation to enable Learning Conversations to prosper.
Our premise is that effective Learning Conversations are one of the critical pillars of business success. They are the essence of how we connect, learn, share, inspire and deliver results. We have used this premise as a beginning from which to take an explorative journey of understanding, into the power and potential of Learning Conversations. Through these powerful conversations we hope to unearth or illuminate insights that might help organisations increase their business success through focussing on more skilful and powerful conversations.
These conversations span our everyday interactions with colleagues, teams or clients; through to the more formal, structured conversations within meetings, performance review or appraisals. Choosing a Learning Conversation ethos as part of your performance development appraisals is a truly positive step and will ensure that people will be open and honest, and the essential humility and vulnerability will be able to occupy the space, allowing an interchange of learning to happen that would not be possible in a conversation which does not have its explicit focus on Learning.
Being bold enough to start with the Leadership Teams could mean role modelling a more human, curious and courageous approach to conversations across the organisation. It could mean challenging our business leaders to actively remove some of the, often unnoticed, barriers to listening to people at all levels of the organisation. Or it could simply mean creating the time and space for leaders to connect and talk with each other in new and different ways.
Conversations are complex, contextual and individual. There is a great deal of work needed to understand just how powerful everyday workplace conversations can be, and the rich tapestry underpinning how they enable us to show up as leaders. By delving into the complexities of conversations using support structures such as internal coaching, and with a general shift towards growing a conversational culture, there is the potential to evolve the quality of conversations in organisations to enable them to become the main sources of competitive advantage in the 21st century.

- Explore the research behind the power of the Learning Conversation to raise engagement, motivation, attention-span and productivity
- Reverse your thinking. Most of us decide whether or not to speak up by considering the risks of doing so. Those who are best at having crucial learning conversations don’t think first about the risks of speaking up. They think first about the risks of not speaking up. This simple reversal of risk assessment makes them far more likely to speak up.
- Change your emotions. The reason these conversations often go poorly is because we are irritated, angry, or disgusted. Others react to these emotions- they sense more than the words we speak. So, before opening your mouth, open your mind. Try to see others as reasonable, rational, and decent human beings—a practice that softens strong emotions and ensures you come across more agreeably.
- Make others feel safe. People become defensive when they feel unsafe. Start a high-stakes conversation by assuring the other person of your positive intentions and your respect for them. When others feel respected and trust your motives, they feel safe, let their guard down, and begin to listen – even if the topic is unpleasant.
- Invite dialogue. After you create an environment of safety, express your concerns, and then invite dialogue. Encourage the other person to disagree with you. Those who are best at crucial conversations don’t just come to make their point; they come to learn.

Mastering the Learning Conversation
For Individuals, Teams and Organisations
When we silence ourselves and our employees (even when we’re convinced that it is the right thing to do) we are often damaging our relationships and limiting innovation and growth. Research shows that this tendency to remain silent rather than express a different view happens in both individual relationships, in teams and it can be a phenomenon of organisational culture. There is even a whole research area around the topic of organisational silence.
We often fear a loss of status or rejection from the group if we differ from the consensus. A fundamental need we all have is to belong, and we often feel the way to do this is to conform. We often say what we think other people want us to say.
For a true Learning Conversation to take place there first needs to be a culture of trust and integrity, which welcomes and values the views of everyone – no matter what their role or experience level.
This programme will support you to:
- Understand the dynamics and the power of a Learning Conversation
- Develop the skills required to lead a Learning Conversation
- Assess your traits in relation to leading and participating in a Learning Conversation
- Create a Personal Development plan in order to improve your skills and focus on the traits required to effectively master the art of Learning Conversations
Trust is a critical element that is hard to fake. It is the one thing that changes everything; it is common to every individual, team and relationship, and, if removed, can destroy even the most powerful organisation. In high-trust organisations, information is shared openly and mistakes are tolerated as a means of learning.
Integrity, authenticity and trust are essential. Employees will only participate and share their thoughts when they feel safe and know their opinions are both valued and will be acted on.
This programme will support you to:
- Understand the benefits, dynamics and the power of Learning Conversations in a team context
- Develop the skills required to lead a Learning Conversation
- Assess the team traits in relation to facilitating and participating in a Learning Conversation
- Create a Team Development plan in order to improve the team skills and focus on the traits required to effectively master the art of Learning Conversations
Good communication practices are at the heart of every successful business. Communication serves two essential functions in every organisation. It disseminates the information needed by employees to get things done and builds relationships of trust and commitment. Without it, employees end up working in silos with no clear direction, vague goals and little opportunity for improvement. Successful projects and change programs are a rarity and real leadership is scarce.
Staff morale plummets when communication is ambiguous, unfocused, lacking in important details and does not allow for genuine two-way dialogue. Two-way communication is critical if we are to create a real Learning Conversation so that we move away from one individual dominating the dialogue suppressing ideas, creativity and engagement.
A willingness to invest in the ‘how’ of better leadership conversations requires a compelling business case and proof of the return on investment (ROI). In turn this demands a keen understanding of the data around engagement, empowerment, retention, innovation and increased team performance as well as a bank of powerful stories, harvested from conversations with people working within the organisation.
This programme will support you to:
- Understand the benefits, dynamics and the power of Learning Conversations across a whole organisation and its impact on engagement, learning and productivity
- Assess the organisation’s traits in relation to leading and participating in a Learning Conversation
- Based on the results, develop a Learning Conversation Organisational Development Strategy for the organisation in order to ensure that there is clear guidance and advice on where the skills are required most in order to create the maximum impact on learning, engagement and productivity
- Develop the skills required to facilitate and participate in a Learning Conversation
