About the Programme
OVERVIEW
"We've GOT to stop constantly re-inventing the wheel here!" or “If we do what we always do, we will get what we always got” Agreed?
The wisdom of learning from failure is incontrovertible. Yet organisations that do it well are extraordinarily rare.
In these changing, fast paced times, learning our lessons is more important than it has ever been before. Can we really afford the time to repeat our mistakes again and again? The truth is that if we do not learn our lessons we will be left behind. We also need to be smart in recognizing and noting the successes in our organisation in order to ensure that we understand the root cause of the success so we can ensure that these can be repeated or the learning reinforced. The focus on learning and being mindful of the action we wish to take as a result of this learning, is imperative in these fast-paced times.
This programme is the pinnacle of the Investors in Learning Lessons Learned suite of programmes and builds on the learning from the previous levels – An introduction to the Lessons Learned process and Becoming a Lessons Learned Practitioner. This programme can be taken as an accredited stand-alone ILM programme or as part of the other two programmes.
At this level the focus is on whole organisation change and creating a Lessons Learned culture in order to ensure sustainability and drive improvement. The programme has been created with the whole organisation in mind, however it can also be taken by individuals who wish to develop their self-improvement to an exceptional level.
The role of Ambassador is crucial in ensuring that there are some designated individuals who are change agents and have the development of a Healthy Learning Culture in the forefront of their minds. It is their role to encourage others to understand and internalise the values and behaviours, and to have the courage to do the right things even in the face of adversity. Culture change is a long process and there is no quick fix. The Ambassadors are there to ensure that the values are lived and that new successful habits are developed for long term sustainable success.
We would advise leaders in an organisation to take this programme as they are the ones that should set and reinforce the values and behaviours in an organisation.
However, we would also encourage you to offer this programme to other people throughout your organisation. We have a tool that will help us to identify the people who have the necessary traits for this role. It is very effective to have people in this role throughout your organisation who are not in a leadership role, as this creates a new-found empowerment, motivation and encouragement from the bottom up in a way that cannot be created by the leaders themselves. This way a true learning community can be built where everyone regardless of hierarchy will develop a motivation to be open and feel safe to share their vital stories and challenges which may lead to the greatest learning. After all the lessons learned have to come from all places across the organisation. Therefore it can be vital to have your Lessons Learned Ambassadors strategically placed where some of the deepest challenges can be turned into learning opportunities.
Of course every organisation is unique so we will of course explore all this with you as we design your unique solution that is right for you, your culture, your needs and your context.

Becoming a Lessons Learned Ambassador
For Individuals, Teams and Organisations
This programme will enable you to become a Change Agent within your organisation and to create and implement a Lessons Learned strategy.
You will develop the skills of effective facilitation and learn how to use a range of tried and tested techniques to analyse problems and issues. This will support the development of a learning culture within your organisation.
If you are the leader in an organisation or are in a leadership role, this programme will take your leadership skills to a new level.
On an individual level, if you are interested in this programme to drive exceptional self-development, by learning to review and reflect on your learning, you will become a more conscious and self- aware learner. This will also enable you to support the development of others and to draw out information and experiences to identify new ways of working for success. It will ensure that you develop learning habits to ensure that you do not go through the same vicious cycles of life and that you make the most of learning from your experiences, so that you move to new levels of understanding rather than repeating the same mistakes again and again. It will also allow you to see your successes, to note these as best practises and consciously ensure that you repeat these in the future. By having strategies that support you to review and assess your learning, you will be able to develop habits that will help you throughout your life. You will be able to focus on your choices consciously and with intent to see things that you did not see before.
Does your team benefit from application of effective Lessons Learned? Does it learn from previous quality issues? A vast amount of learning takes place every day in every business setting yet the learning is often not acted upon to either maintain the success or identify areas to improve. Sharing Lessons Learned improves quality and operational excellence. Having Lessons Learned Ambassadors within the team will enable the sharing of information and ideas across the organisation to create a true learning environment and culture.
The role of Ambassador in an organisation is imperative to help create and maintain a positive healthy learning culture. You can develop your whole team as Ambassadors in order to accelerate the development and consciousness and learning about how to create and stimulate culture change. A team of Lessons Learned Ambassadors can also be created by people from across the organisation in order to become a strong team that supports various departments creating the Lessons Learned Strategies and the building of a Lessons Learned Culture
Establishing Lessons Learned Ambassadors throughout the organisation will help to create a learning environment where employees at all levels engage with the Lessons Learned process. Ideally a team of Ambassadors needs to be established in order to support various departments creating the Lessons Learned Strategies and the building of an Agile Lessons Learned Culture.
When used well, Lessons Learned can contribute to the overall success of the business by re-using and building on approaches that have worked well and avoiding the repetition of previous mistakes. Lessons Learned can also represent valuable intellectual property, deepen the relationship between suppliers and customers, and generally provide a competitive advantage. A disciplined approach to Lessons Learned can make an important difference to cost, quality and time for any size of organisation.
The Ambassadors’ role is to maintain an overview of the Lessons and to encourage the effective implementation of these across the business. The Ambassador is also a key support to the Lessons Learned Practitioners ensuring that where risks or issues need to be explored the Practitioners have someone to turn to and there can be a team approach.
When we are planning a Lessons Learned Culture Change project then we will use this programme to support part of the process. There are two other programmes which have been developed to create a Lessons Learned Culture. The role of the Lessons Learned Ambassador, has been designed to embed the learning at a cultural level and have roles in place to ensure that cultural change is possible. Please note that this programme can also be taken as a stand-alone.
As part of a wider culture change project, becoming a Lessons Learned Ambassador is the third step of the process. Here are the three steps so you can see the wider context:
Step 1 -The first step is to have a foundational programme which introduces the whole concept and culture of Lessons Learned. This is for all people so that the necessary foundation and awareness raising is established.
Step 2 -To train Lessons Learned Practitioners who have the skills in facilitating meetings and workshops and to create the Learning environment necessary to hear people’s stories, issues, challenges and successes
Step 3 -Here we train Lessons Learned Ambassadors in order to have people who have the role and responsibility to encourage the Lessons Learned culture and to be the agent for change that stimulates open and honest conversation.
