About the Programme

"Dissatisfaction and discouragement are not caused by the absence of things but the absence of vision."

“To the person who does not know where he wants to go there is no favourable wind.”
-- Seneca [Roman philosopher]

OVERVIEW

Having vision, and understanding how values underpin this vision, and being able to effectively explore and communicate is the foundation of great leadership. Being able to develop our own personal vision is also central to our ability to create a planned future and have clarity about where we wish to go in our lives.

In this programme we are focusing on both the vision and the values. We have a programme specifically on developing your purpose and vision, as well as a programme on only developing values, as the focus required will depend on where you as an individual, team or organisation are in your development. Specific focus on both areas is vital as it takes time to build a vision and it takes dedicated time to build a set of values. These are actually two separate areas of work. However, they also need to be combined. Having values which underpin your vision will provide a deeper consideration to the nature of the vision as well as how the vision should be lived.

There are recognisable characteristics in great leaders and simple strategies anyone can adopt to improve employee performance and change the work environment for the better. Establishing a carefully planned and documented vision and values with your direct reports defines goals for the group and creates a personal ownership for every individual. Including your staff in a collaborative process cultivates buy-in and general acceptance. Taking time to define organisational vision and values and including people in making sense of this illustrates a commitment to the way in which people engage with the organisation.

If your wish is to develop a Healthy Learning Culture and an organisation where people are engaged, have the necessary agility and traits with the commitment and belief in developing their skills over time, then a clear vision along with a values framework is an essential component of success.

Clear values for an individual in a team or organisation creates meaning and clarity of what is valued, prioritised and important. Values for individuals, team or organisations are like a navigation system. Values can give crucial guidelines to people about how to behave and also where the boundaries are between what is acceptable and unacceptable. Understanding values involves making them tangible in terms of what they look like in behavioural terms. Individuals who have thought hard about their values will have an internal clarity which other are less likely to have.

If an individual is working in an environment where their values are not in alignment with the organisational values, then we know that this is not a sustainable situation. If the gulf between personal values and organisational values is too large, then eventually the relationship will break, and the individual will break away and find another path. By creating and espousing values, the difficult conversations are held in an environment of safety , with people explicitly being prepared for the conversations to be potentially challenging and charged.

The process of developing values can be very illuminating and can be relationship building if it is done in the right environment with some careful ground rules. Having these conversations in a professional and safe environment allows for consensus to be built and any differences of opinion to be openly discussed. After all, we just need to look around us to see that when it comes to important decisions, the bottom line for people is their values. Your values are the DNA of your inner self. They create the foundation for you as a human being. When these are challenged that is when things can get fiery and our survival instincts can kick in.

Therefore values are so important to consider and understand in order to truly live your vision. If a vision and values are not aligned, then this will result in disengagement. Involving people in the development of both vision and values will create a sense of ownership and empowerment which will develop positive relationships as well as impact on engagement and productivity.

Fundamentally when we build a vision, we then also need to plan to sustain this vision and the values that we choose into the long term. Therefore, we need to think about the long game rather than just a period of time where we focus; instead we are planning for a constant revision of visions and values. Life never stands still and therefore our visions and values may also shift. Particular circumstances will demand that we change and adapt our visions.

Ideally, we want to develop life success habits to help us set and review our vision and the values so that we are creating more and amore self-awareness and are continually developing, evolving and self-correcting in order to move closer and closer to who we wish to be. This evolution is what we are aiming for at the individual, team and organisational levels.

Creating & Embedding your Vision & Values

For Individuals, Teams and Organisations

Understanding our Self and our Identity is crucial to our ability to progress at any point in our lives. Creating clarity around our own Identity is crucial to our ability to identify our priorities, set our goals, and then drive our energy and performance in the direction that we need to in order to achieve our goals.

The process of creating your personal passionate vision and values are core to the development of yourself and to define the journey of travel for your life. Without the thought and making a commitment to your vision and values, there will also not be the necessary action to follow. Every meaningful action is backed by thoughts and preparation, but how many actions are really that thoughtful as opposed to just being behaviours that we act out due to habits that we are unaware of.

This programme will support you to:

  • Understand the core values that are important to you
  • Use a values framework to support you in the development of your own personal values
  • Become aware of your unconscious habits which may not be serving you in achieving your vision and living your values
  • Develop conscious success habits in order to be able to implement your vision into the long term.
  • Develop your own vision and values for personal and business success
  • Consider your vision and how your values can be used to live your vision
  • Create a clear action plan and support network to ensure your vision and values are lived in everyday life.

When building a team vision and values, we must respect the fact that the process may well unleash deeply felt beliefs, passions, emotions and vulnerabilities that have not shown before; where there are conflicting deep-seated beliefs then these need to be discussed and debated before real progress can be made in reaching a consensus.

The varying traits in the team will influence the whole process. The degree of importance, urgency and passion individuals attach to varying issues will have a direct impact on the dynamics in the team. Similarly, the degree of courage, belief and boldness to create a new vision and associated values will impact on the energy and the interactions in the team.

Today’s business climate of outsourcing, in-sourcing, virtual teams, and ROI-driven objectives can leave a manager at any level feeling exhausted, out of control and sometimes powerless. Yet, we often see examples of those who can elicit unwavering support from their teams, driving highly effective projects, and getting the best performance from employees despite ever-increasing workloads. What is it about these individuals that makes them stand out as great leaders? A leader who displays clarity and seeks consensus on team vision and values, will be having conversations with their team members which engage them as human beings with unique strengths which involve people’s honest beliefs and the integrity of individuals rather than only talking about outcomes and the financial bottom line. This will support the team to feel engaged and valued.

This programme will support you to:

  • Establish a carefully planned and documented vision with your direct reports
  • Define goals for the group and creates a personal ownership for every individual.
  • Include your staff in a collaborative process that cultivates buy-in and general acceptance of the vision and values.
  • Consider your team vision and how your values can be used to live your vision, make sure that the vision and values are connected and bring examples alive so that meaning is created for people
  • Meaningfully integrate the business vision and values into everyday business conversations to raise engagement and awareness

Recognising your core organisational values and setting out your vision is an important step but creating a collaborative process is fundamental to ensure buy-in throughout the organisation. Learning from other great leaders and adopting some simple strategies can improve employee performance and change the work environment for the better.

You may be living and working in an organisation with dormant issues that are not being explored. Within a Healthy Learning Culture the open message is that difficult subjects need to be discussed openly and not avoided, as problems avoided can lead to deeper issues further down the line.

This programme will support you to:

  • Develop a shared business vision
  • Explore and create the business values you decide you need to live by to achieve the vision
  • Understand the fundamental importance and benefits of working with values and integrating these values into everyday business activities
  • Understand the unintended consequences of not explicitly developing and espousing values.
  • Understand how to communicate the vision and values to other parts of the business to realise business success
  • Live the values as a business to foster coherence, positive engagement and business success

Please ensure you read about our unique tailored approach in order to understand that we will always tailor our programmes with the prime aim to address your challenges and meet your needs.
