OVERVIEW
Understanding and implementing the concept of Quality as well as processes that support Quality throughout your business will have a direct impact on motivation, engagement and your bottom line.
In the Investors in Learning Driving Success model, ‘Quality’ sits within the ‘Process’ element of the model. To create processes without a clear definition and understanding of what Quality means throughout the business, will mean that everyone will carry out their work in varying ways with their own subjective interpretation of how Quality is to be lived and applied within their roles and across the organisation.
Developing a shared understanding
Working on developing a shared understanding of the concept of Quality and how this is defined and lived within the organisation, is a key factor which will ensure that the unknown becomes known, tangible, and applied. In order to apply good or best practise we need to be able to define and recognise this. However, we also know that of course good practise in theory is easier than in reality and therefore needs to be continually reviewed and monitored.Having clarity over what Quality means, becomes a practical and helpful way of assessing progress and ensuring that good practise is recognised, celebrated and reinforced, whilst bad practise is tackled so that any negative impact is noticed and tackled in time. Through explicit recognition and awareness of what good practise represents in an organisation, it becomes possible to apply a benchmark of what is expected.
Setting clear expectations
Setting clear expectations can make the difference between success and failure in an organisation. Clear expectations are driven by clarity of outcomes as well as the processes that are applied to achieve these. Without the clarity, we are tapping in the dark and everything evolves randomly, through subjective standards, rather than in a planned and clear fashion.By consciously setting out to clarify, identify , communicate and socialise the concept of Quality in any setting , this will raise awareness , change the conversations and ensure that people start thinking in terms of how they can apply these concepts to their specific roles and responsibilities. Leaders and managers in the business need to all take responsibility to disseminate the concept and create meaning and allow for sense making so that people can genuinely translate the concepts into tangible behaviours, tasks or actions that relate to them. Understanding and creating Quality Expectations is a process of setting and sharing standards and must be intrinsically intertwined with the values that exist in a business.

Aligning Quality standards with the organisational purpose and values
The definition of Quality and the organisational values are part of the same conversation and need to be aligned. If there is a misalignment of these then it is very unlikely that any behaviours which support the desired quality standards, will take hold.Of course there are Quality expectations that need to be set at varying levels and contexts throughout the organisation. Quality needs defining at the individual, team and whole organisational level. People need to understand what these concepts mean in practise and in tangible behavioural terms. Organisational Quality concepts need to be defined and then socialised throughout the business so that all people can make sense of these concepts in relation to their roles and responsibilities. Everyone must be able to interpret the Quality concept and apply this to their role and everyday behaviours. These also need to be aligned with the organisational vision and values.
With that clarity it is then possible to set clear expectations. and understanding of the essential aspects of Quality in order to develop a reflective approach where people are honest about current practise and are able to honestly appraise the various elements of the working processes, implement lessons learned and be clear about reviewing practise in order to ensure that all people live and apply the concept of Quality in similar ways.

The need for a Learning Culture to drive and consistently encourage the development and maintenance of high quality standards and behaviours
Without a Learning Culture or ethos, the psychological safety or the conversations or organisational narrative around the need for regular Lessons Learned and Organisational Learning, it is far less likely that people will challenge the status quo or point to risks or issues which may be affecting quality standards. People need to be encouraged and have a reason to develop and then to maintain quality, without fear of repercussion or any type of personal injury. The word Quality is often used indiscriminately for many different meanings. Quality can be defined as “fitness for use,” “customer satisfaction”, “doing things right the first time,” or “zero defects.” These definitions are all acceptable because Quality can refer to degrees of excellence.
Many organisations will focus on reviewing outcomes, performance or business targets; all these are of course important. However, these considerations and measures are not enough for sustainable individual, team and organisational success. It is vital that the messages across the organisation, the purpose and the processes are all shared, and time is taken to explore these principles. People need to believe in the principles and feel safe to live them.

High Quality expectations in relation to people development
Of course we need to decide what we apply our quality expectations to. Is it just our products and services, or also the culture, norms and behaviours that we are developing and moulding every single day? We can provide you with the data to assess all aspects of the Driving Success model. This then allows a clear appraisal and monitoring for continual improvement and planning for maximum engagement for all.Setting clear benchmarks and expectations across all the elements means that the expectations versus the reality can be compared. That data and clarity can lead to necessary action and KPIs which can inform necessary actions and inform best practise.
If everyone knows that quality management is applied to your internal processes and standards, and not only what the external customer sees or hears, then this will help to raise morale. Quality expectations will be the driver of essential behaviours integral to long term success.
Managing Quality means constantly pursuing excellence; making sure that what your organisation does is fit for purpose, and not only stays that way, but keeps continually improving. Good Quality management can enhance your organisation’s brand and reputation, protect it against risks, increase its efficiency, boost its profits and position it to keep on growing. All while making staff and customers happier. This is an iterative and developmental process. The same also applies at the team and organisational level.
Don’t just survive – learn to thrive….
